The Importance of Hydration

We’ve partnered with MoliCare® to look at the importance of hydration and what to avoid to prevent dehydration.

It’s important to stay hydrated for our overall health and wellbeing with most people aiming to consume around 6-8 cups of fluid a day.  But it’s also vital for people managing incontinence to ensure they’re drinking enough beneficial liquids to help with the condition.  Water is almost always the best drink to reach for but how does it benefit us?

Drinking water and staying hydrated performs a number of important functions in the body that include:

  • Helping to flush the bladder of bacteria
  • Aids digestion
  • Preventing constipation
  • Regulate body temperature
  • Protect organs and body tissue

If you’re caring for someone with incontinence, one of the main benefits is to prevent urine from becoming too concentrated.  Concentrated urine can irritate the bladder leading to an increased urge and frequency to urinate.  People sometimes think that if they drink less, they’ll be less incontinent, but it can make things worse.

Drinking enough water will help decrease the risk of leakages and the amount of urine you produce, making managing incontinence easier. You also don’t want to irritate the bladder when you have incontinence. Some drinks will have a diuretic effect, while others can irritate the bladder.

Drinks to avoid include:

  • Alcohol
  • Carbonated drinks
  • Caffeinated drinks
  • Milk
  • Hot chocolate

If you’re caring for people with incontinence, keep these factors in mind and try MoliCare® incontinence products by calling us on 01423 331 000 or email us at [email protected] and make MoliCare® part of your daily routine.
